Search Engine Optimization

A website without Search Engine Optimization is like a lion without deadly paws, no matter how fearful he is, it is harmless.

How does search engine work?

The number of active websites is around 2 billion and millions of posts go live daily. By the time you read this, dozens of posts were published online. We rely on search engines for searching information and the information that we are looking for is found among these 2 billion websites.

Over the years, the search engines have become so good that 91% of people rely on search engines to get the information they need. Search engines have become super smart, thanks for semantic search. There are many good search engines but Google shares 63.9% of the users. So concepts shared here applies to all search engines too.

When we search for something on Google, we get search results page (also known as SERPs) and the SERPs contain a lot of information and elements:

  1. A number of websites/articles Google found that are relevant to what you are looking for.
  2. Some search results will contain ads (on the right and/or in the search results) for which companies pay to Google for showing their ads to people searching for a particular keyword. That’s Google AdWords.
  3. Apart from all these, people mostly care about the organic listing on the SERPs.

This is the actual result of the searched query. These organic search results contain articles which contain information what you are looking for. This is just one page, there are hundreds of such pages containing articles/links that contain information that you are looking for.

Note: The more deeper pages you see, less relevant they tend to be.

75% of the users don’t even go past the first page. If they don’t find what they are looking for they change the query and don’t bother checking subsequent pages. Of those who check the first page, click only first three results.

And this is the reason why optimizing your website by search engine optimization is important.

So now let us see how to optimize your website so that you can rank your content in first three ranks.

How to optimize your website for top three positions in Google?

When someone searches for something, on the search results page they find the results. They click on the results and come to your website. These People are none other than your potential customers/readers or subscribers, If not immediately soon they will. Once they come to your website, they get exactly what they are looking for.

A site’s rank on SERPs is determined by what we call as “PageRank” which has now become more stringent to assign. Every website that’s live has a ranking for particular keywords, search terms. Initially, the search engines used to track all the words used on the webpage.

If you search for “Hyderabadi Biriyani”, the search engine would return all the articles containing these two terms in exact same order. In this case, the ranking was determined the number of times these terms appear, higher number of time you can include these terms, higher you will rank. To make it look organic, the articles were long enough to include the keywords more number of times.

While researching for their Ph.D., two students found that the number of times a keyword appeared in a document wasn’t actually relevant to their research. Instead, more citation that a document had of other document was actually more relevant to each other.

They applied this concept to web search and came up with a concept of “Backlinks”, which meant that more website linking to another website proved more relevancy of that website. And hence help people with their research/search.

That’s how Google was born.

All the websites follow this model. No doubt they look at your keywords but your PageRank depends on

  1. Number of Backlinks
  2. Quality of Backlinks

For better understanding, think it like this.

Keywords help Google see what your website is and what you have to offer the users.

Backlinks determine HOW much trust other websites are having on your website. Keywords inform search chain that your website exists and Backlinks helps your website grow higher in ranking.

As important as these two factors are, there two components in SEO.

  • On-page SEO and
  • Off- Page SEO

In On-page SEO you determine the title, meta descriptions, have a clean and user-friendly design. You add proper keywords, including everything relevant to your niche.

If off-page SEO, you get to deal with social media, lead generation, backlinks, guest posts, discussion. Important thing is to know that the relevance and quality of website linking to your website will help you rank higher.

If you are outreaching people for backlinks or using any tools to generate backlinks make sure you link to the right site, doesn’t matter if it’s less authoritative but it should be relevant and contains quality content.

There will be instances that people will upfront link to your website, (you can know it from Google search console) and if you find that it’s spammy and irrelevant - get it removed right away. Directly contact the owner and tell them to remove it.Once you get started, search engine optimization is easy.
