Google reshaped its search algorithm to deal with the billion of pages and searches made every day, with backlinks in mind. Given that Google handles 2 trillion searches every year, it has to be smart and strict. So in the latest update, Google has laid a lot of weight on backlinks.

What is a quality backlink?

In simple words, a quality backlink is a web page linking or pointing to a particular web page of your website.

What are the types of backlinks in SEO

Based on the types of backlinks you get, the ranks and traffic would vary. You can know the type of backlinks from webmaster tools.

Informational backlinks

These are the backlinks that provide more information on the words linked in the text. Wikipedia is the classic example for this.

Definitional backlinks

Backlinks that provide extended definition to the linked words on your web page.

Referential backlinks

When a web page is linked for source citation purpose.

Promotional backlinks

The most commonly used backlinks are promotional backlinks. The linking of your content in guest posts, forums, Q&A platforms etc are an example of this.

Why are Backlinks important for your web pages?

Not long ago did having low-quality backlinks was also considered to rank pages by Google. But since the Penguin algorithm update, this game has changed everything. A lot of top-notch bloggers lost the traffic and rank drastically before they could know what has happened.

It took quite a long time to understand the reason the drop. But once understood they did not commit the mistake ever again. Not only having backlinks is important, but having quality backlinks is what matters. If you see backlinks from spam or automated websites, remove it immediately.

Now let’s have a look why having quality backlinks is important.

#1 Increases traffic & organic ranking

With more quality backlinks pointing to your domain the traffic in going to shoot up. As the backlinks bring traffic to your domains your ranking will also be increasing.

Notice, if any of your content is ranked well then surely one of the reasons behind this would be quality backlinks.

#2 Strong signal to Google search crawler

When a search engine encounters a backlink to a domain, it considers your domain to be informative and also worth showing to more people.

And because of the traffic from backlinks search engine again considers your content to be useful and place it over the pages with fewer backlinks.

#3 Builds Domain Authority/Page Authority

Domain authority is score developed by Moz which predicts how well a website would do on SERP and same goes with the page authority.

Higher the DA/PA higher will the quality of backlinks (in case you are seeking backlinks) or higher will the be the rank (in case DA/PA of your web pages are high)

And it is important to know that backlinks from the high-quality website also increase your DA/PA.

#4 Faster indexing

Since you have got high PR backlinks, your content will be indexed faster. Reason being the domain pointing towards yours is already indexed well, so along with that domain, even your content will index well.

Terms related to backlinks that you should know

  • Link juice: When a web page links to your web page, it passes “link juice” to your web page which helps you rank high and increase DA.
  • No-Follow tag: No follow tag lets you stop passing link juice to the other website. However, Google doesn’t like no-follow tag as it does not contribute anything in SEO. But you can always use it to link a less reliable site.
  • Do-Follow tag: Exactly opposite to No-follow is a Do-follow tag. It passes the link juice to the linked web page. By default, all the link created are Do-follow tagged.
  • Linking root domain: It is the number of unique domains linking to your web page.
  • Anchor Text: It is the text with the link embedded in it. Anchor text plays important role in SEO as contains the link to a website. It also helps you rank for a keyword.

How to increase traffic with quality backlinks

Create awesome article and offer it

Search for articles related to your niche, find some amazing sites where the posts are almost similar to what you want to get backlinks for. Contact the site owner and in a very professional manner offer them your content to link to.

Also mention how will they be benefited by doing this, this trick wins every time. Look for some etiquettes to write a request mail for backlinks, follow it and get the backlinks for free. But before that make sure you have a top-notch content.

Create top quality content to attract backlinks

This is something that you control. The two ways mentioned above are tentative, might not work no matter how hard you try. By this method is cent percent fruitful If you are just above average in creating content.

Create content that people would want to link to as it will be beneficial to them. Spread your content on social media so that people would read it and might even link to.

Do some guest postings

Easiest and efficient way to get backlinks. Look for some top quality websites in your niche and create awesome content for the website. In return get backlinks.

Make sure your create content selflessly as you are getting something really big in exchange of this. Stay highly active on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Quora, medium, stack overflow and forums (wrt your niche) that are highly appreciated by search engines.

Involve in Email Outreach program

One of my favorite and highly efficient, email outreach has been diversely used by many top bloggers. And hence I’d recommend you to have email outreach for all your posts.

There are tools like Buzzsumo that has the data of bloggers and their recent work, social shares, stats of their work, most shared content, key influencers and lot more (these features are paid) apart from this there free but manual ways to get information of people to reach out to for your email outreach program.

  1. Google the keyword you want to rank for.
  2. List out the contact details of blogs that rank well for that keyword
  3. Get more such contacts by searching for all possible combination of that keyword (use LSI graph for this or Searches related to search term below the search result page)
  4. Have a nice way to pitch bloggers with your content and get backlinks

Important things to keep in mind when building backlinks

  • Relevant backlinks > quality backlinks
Apart from being a high authority domain linking to your domain, it’s highly important to have relevant links linking to your domain else there are chances that search engine bots might consider this as spam and might put your content down the page in SERP. If your website is an automobile niche, a backlink from another automobile website is much better a backlink from HuffPost.
  • Position the backlinks right
The position of links also matters. If the link to your domain is placed at a prime location of that page it’s time to celebrate or else either request the owner of the website to place it at correct place else tell them to remove it.
  • Editorial links do wonders
Editorial links are nothing but links that are manually placed. Creating an account on a site and placing backlinks might get you penalized. However, this is not the case with platforms like Quora, medium, Facebook, stack overflow etc. They are very high authority websites and backlinks from these sites help a lot to rank. You must have heard of sites that get most of their traffic from social media and rank amazingly in SERP also.
